Program Overview

The Entomology program focuses on animal pests of rice and soybeans. These pests are mainly insects but this project has conducted research on blackbird management in rice also. In addition, the recent introduction of channeled apple snail into the Texas Rice Belt may lead to new research directions involving snail management. The Entomology project also conducts research on sugarcane and sorghum.
All research is aimed at developing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs utilizing an array of tactics including cultural, biological, genetic (also transgenic) and chemical. The  Entomology project also has Extension responsibilities. The basic goal of the project is to develop and extend to our stakeholders in Southeast Texas IPM programs that are effective, affordable and safe.
