Rice Breeding and Genetics

Conventional rice varieties for the Texas rice industry

Enhancing rice varieties for a thriving Texas industry

The goal of the Rice Breeding and Genetics Program at Beaumont is to enhance rice varieties with higher main and ratoon crop yields, disease resistance, herbicide and stress tolerance, emphasizing cold and heat, with improved quality-related traits.

The program conducts basic research to find suitable germplasms with backgrounds to enhance the overall genetic gain of the program and solve various issues of rice growers in Texas. Developing high-yielding and high-quality rice varieties is necessary to make the Texas rice industry profitable and sustainable.
